Management of Cleft Lip and Palate in the Developing World
By: Mars, Michael (ed.); Habel, Alex (ed.); Sell, Debbie (ed.)
Published by: John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (UK)
This book explores the complex issues surrounding the management of cleft lip and palate in the Developing World, and aims to raise the profile of a condition commonly considered to be of only cosmetic importance in countries where infant and child mortality rates are high. It provides information and guidelines to three groups: those in the Developing World setting up programmes of cleft lip and palate care, and clinicians from developed countries delivering care in that context, as well as clinicians in the Developing World itself. The book is multidisciplinary, demonstrating the role of every member of the team, not just the surgeon, and includes contributions from charity organisations which support these cleft lip and palate programmes. Each area of clinical practice is covered, comparing typical care in developed countries with that in the Developing World, and contains practical suggestions as to how the gap may be narrowed. Management of Cleft Lip and Palate in the Developing World is an important resource for anyone having - or planning to have - a commitment to develop services in that environment and to clinicians in the Developing World faced with large numbers of cleft lip and palate patients and limited resources of materials and manpower.

Methods in Clinical Phonetics
By: Ball, Martin J.; Lowry, Orla
Published by: John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (UK)
This book is written for the beginning student of communication disorders with a basic understanding of phonetics, or the practising speech-language therapist whose phonetic training may need updating. It introduces the reader to the main areas of phonetics, and the main methods through which the phonetician reduces speech data to a permanent record. The book, then, illustrates the three main approaches to the investigation of spoken language; articulatory, acoustic, and auditory. Further, it describes how impressionistic phonetic transcription through symbolisation differs from instrumental phonetic techniques. For each of these areas of discussion, chapters are provided that examine the general phonetic aspects, followed by chapters that illustrate their application to clinical data. The authors are both phoneticians with experience of investigating both normal and disordered speech through both impressionistic and instrumental means, and this is the first book in this market that describes a whole range of data reduction techniques and illustrates them with data relevant to the student and practitioner of communication disorders.

now you know me think more""
By: Hundal, Ppinder; Lukey, Pauline
Published by: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
Pauline Lukey first met Ppinder Hundal when Ppinder was eight years old, at which point Ppinder was non-verbal and had no formal way of communicating. This book charts their development together as, through the use of facilitated communication techniques, Ppinder has shown herself to be an eager and increasingly fluent communicator. Beginning with the use of sign language, moving on to assisted typing (the title of this book being drawn from the first spontaneous phrase that Ppinder typed) and finally to Ppinder's current desire to learn to read and write, both authors recount their remarkable journey from Ppinder's first signs (''coat,'' ''more,'' ''cookie,'' and ''finish'') to her ability now to discuss her medication with her carers and converse, via laptop, with her autistic friends. This honest and moving account demonstrates the remarkable effects of facilitated communication and highlights that communication is a skill that everyone is entitled to enjoy.

Occupational Audiometry
By: Maltby, Maryanne; Maltby, Maryanne Tate
Published by: Butterworth-Heinemann (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
The EU Physical Agents Directive on Noise, which will be implemented into UK law in February 2006, will reduce noise action levels drastically. Under the new regulations, many more industries, which have so far not been associated with high noise levels such as restaurants and call centres, will have to assess the noise levels in their businesses and monitor their employees hearing according to HSE guidelines. This practical guide gives occupational health nurses everything they need to know about setting up and managing hearing conservation programmes, as well as how to carry out the audiometric tests. The text fully covers the syllabus of BSA accredited courses for the certificate of competence in Industrial Audiometry and includes practical examples, case studies, sample audiograms and questionnaires for setting up case histories. As the BSA syllabus is based on the HSEs guidelines, the book will be a useful training manual and up-to-date reference for Health and Safety professionals, Occupational Health professionals, and HSE inspectors.Dr Maryanne Maltby is an Audiological Scientist and Principal Lecturer on the Amplivox courses in Industrial Audiometry. She has previously taught Audiology and related subjects at Manchester University (Course Leader) and at Oxford Brookes University. Overcoming Hearing Aid Fears
By: Burkey, John M.
Published by: Rutgers University Press
Approximately 10 percent of Americans (and nearly one-third of people age seventy and older) have some degree of hearing loss that, if left untreated, causes frustration, isolation, and depression. A hearing aid is a simple tool to improve careers, relationships, and self-esteem, and to provide independence and security. Yet of the nearly thirty million people with a hearing impairment, only about 20 percent choose to use one. This is true despite the fact that technological advances have enabled hearing aids to address a greater range of hearing losses, while making them smaller, better designed, and easier to use than those of the past. Overcoming Hearing Aid Fears can help readers take that first step to a better life. Audiologist John M. Burkey addresses common fears, concerns, and misconceptions about this topic. He provides practical information about hearing aid styles, options, and costs. His experience in caring for more than 50,000 patients will help people with hearing loss address their concerns. The book also helps family and friends understand why a loved one might resist getting a hearing aid, and offers tips on counseling. Audiologists will find this text an important educational tool in advising their own patients.
