Blow-up Theory for Elliptic PDEs in Riemannian Geometry
By: Druet, Olivier; Hebey, Emmanuel; Robert, Frederic
Published by: Princeton University Press

Elliptic equations of critical Sobolev growth have been the target of investigation for decades because they have proved to be of great importance in analysis, geometry, and physics. The equations studied here are of the well-known Yamabe type. They involve Schrödinger operators on the left hand side and a critical nonlinearity on the right hand side. A significant development in the study of such equations occurred in the 1980s. It was discovered that the sequence splits into a solution of the limit equation--a finite sum of bubbles--and a rest that converges strongly to zero in the Sobolev space consisting of square integrable functions whose gradient is also square integrable. This splitting is known as the integral theory for blow-up. In this book, the authors develop the pointwise theory for blow-up. They introduce new ideas and methods that lead to sharp pointwise estimates. These estimates have important applications when dealing with sharp constant problems (a case where the energy is minimal) and compactness results (a case where the energy is arbitrarily large). The authors carefully and thoroughly describe pointwise behavior when the energy is arbitrary. Intended to be as self-contained as possible, this accessible book will interest graduate students and researchers in a range of mathematical fields. more...

Boundary Value Problems in Mechanics of Nonhomogeneous Fluids
By: Antontsev, S.N.; Kazhiktov, A.V.; Monakhov, V.N.
Published by: North Holland

The objective of this book is to report the results of investigations made by the authors into certain hydrodynamical models with nonlinear systems of partial differential equations. The investigations involve the results concerning Navier-Stokes equations of viscous heat-conductive gas, incompressible nonhomogeneous fluid and filtration of multi-phase mixture in a porous medium. The correctness of the initial boundary-value problems and the qualitative properties of solutions are also considered. The book is written for those who are interested in the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations and their applications in mechanics. more...

Co-Semigroups and Applications
By: Vrabie, Ioan I.
Published by: JAI Press

The book contains a unitary and systematic presentation of both classical and very recent parts of a fundamental branch of functional analysis: linear semigroup theory with main emphasis on examples and applications. There are several specialized, but quite interesting, topics which didn't find their place into a monograph till now, mainly because they are very new. So, the book, although containing the main parts of the classical theory of C o -semigroups, as the Hille-Yosida theory, includes also several very new results, as for instance those referring to various classes of semigroups such as equicontinuous, compact, differentiable, or analytic, as well as to some nonstandard types of partial differential equations, i.e. elliptic and parabolic systems with dynamic boundary conditions, and linear or semilinear differential equations with distributed (time, spatial) measures. Moreover, some finite-dimensional-like methods for certain semilinear pseudo-parabolic, or hyperbolic equations are also disscussed. Among the most interesting applications covered are not only the standard ones concerning the Laplace equation subject to either Dirichlet, or Neumann boundary conditions, or the Wave, or Klein-Gordon equations, but also those referring to the Maxwell equations, the equations of Linear Thermoelasticity, the equations of Linear Viscoelasticity, to list only a few. Moreover, each chapter contains a set of various problems, all of them completely solved and explained in a special section at the end of the book. The book is primarily addressed to graduate students and researchers in the field, but it would be of interest for both physicists and engineers. It should be emphasised that it is almost self-contained, requiring only a basic course in Functional Analysis and Partial Differential Equations. more...

Computer Solution of Large Linear Systems Studies in Mathematics and its Applications Volume 28 (SMIA)
By: Unknown
Published by: North Holland

The Symposium was the latest in a long-running and well-respected series in this key area of IFAC's technical interest. Its aim was to address the control aspects of those industrial, economic, social and environmental systems whose characteristics are high dimensionality, non-linearity and uncertainty, associated with a multitude of structural forms, with intense and time critical information exchange and efficient co-ordination. The Symposium covered all major aspects of large scale, complex systems including methodological aspects, technological solutions and practical applications. more...
