1, 2, 3 John
By: Culy, Martin M.
Published by: Baylor University Press

In this volume Culy provides a basic lexical, analytical and syntactical analysis of the Greek text of 1, 2, and 3 John-information often presumed by technical commentaries and omitted by popular ones. But more than just an analytic key, I, II, III John reflects the latest advances in scholarship on Greek grammar and linguistics. The volume also contains recommendations for further reading and an up-to-date bibliography. A perfect supplement to any commentary, I, II, and III John is as equally helpful to language students, of any level, as it is to busy clergy who use the Greek text in preparation for proclamation. more...

The 10 Commandments of Common Sense
By: Urban, Hal
Published by: Fireside

The author of Life's Greatest Lessons presents ten principles of practical wisdom to live by, drawn from readings of both the Old and New Testaments for people of all beliefs.Readers love Hal Urban's books for their common sense, their wisdom, and their inspirational affirmation of timeless values. With The 10 Commandments of Common Sense, he continues to build on his central theme -- that there's a direct relationship between good character and the quality of life. He also shows how the teachings of Scripture and the genuine practice of faith can be integral parts of a fulfilling existence.Urban draws on his own lifelong spiritual search -- which has included Protestant churches, the Catholic church, some Eastern philosophies, and human potential psychology -- to produce an ecumenical and nondogmatic examination of the Scriptures, finding in them clear and simple guidance for increasing both purpose and joy in our lives. Five of his principles are do's, as in "Keep a positive outlook on life" and "Bring out the best in other people." The other five are don't's, as in "Don't be seduced by popular culture" and "Don't judge other people." These ten commandments of timeless wisdom will inspire people of all faiths who are searching for more meaning and direction in their lives, no matter where it comes from. more...

2 Maccabees
By: Schwartz, Daniel R.
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

2 Maccabees is a Jewish work composed during the 2nd century BCE and preserved by the Church. Written in Hellenistic Greek and told from a Jewish-Hellenistic perspective, 2 Maccabees narrates and interprets the ups and downs of events that took place in Jerusalem prior to and during the Maccabean revolt: institutionalized Hellenization and the foundation of Jerusalem as a polis; the persecution of Jews by Antiochus Epiphanes, accompanied by famous martyrdoms; and the rebellion against Seleucid rule by Judas Maccabaeus. 2 Maccabees is an important source both for the events it describes and for the values and interests of the Judaism of the Hellenistic diaspora that it reflects - which are often quite different from those represented by its competitor, 1 Maccabees. more...

Abraham, Israel and the Nations
By: Williamson, Paul R.
Published by: Sheffield Academic Press

The divine promises to Abraham have long been recognized as a key to the book of Genesis as a whole. But their variety, often noted, also raises literary and theological problems. Why do they differ each time, and how are they related to each other and to the story of Abraham? Williamson focuses on the promises in Genesis 15 and 17, and concludes that they are concerned with two distinct but related issues. Genesis 15 guarantees God's promise to make Abraham into a great nation, while Genesis 17 focuses chiefly on God's promise to mediate blessing (through Abraham) to the nations. The two chapters are connected, however, by the theme of an individual, royal descendant who will come from the nation (Israel) and mediate blessing to all the nations of the earth. more...

Abram - Abraham
By: Ziemer, Benjamin
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

This substantial contribution to Pentateuch research shows paradigmatically how the politico-geographical concepts from Genesis 14 and the concepts of the theology of promise in Gen 15 are taken up and specifically re-formed in Gen 17 and the final editorial layer. The hypothesis of a basic priestly document is laid to rest for Genesis, and instead, Genesis 17 is acknowledged as the keystone which was created specially for the final compositional systematisation of Genesis as an immediate prelude to the publication of the Torah (approx. 400 BC) and left a lasting mark on the Biblical image of Abraham. more...
