Adamgirk'
By: Stone, Michael E. (ed.)
Published by: OUP Oxford
The first English translation of a major work of medieval literature: the Armenian epic poem on Adam and Eve, Adamgirk, composed by Arak`el of Siwnik` in the early fifteenth century. Michael E. Stone also supplies an illuminating introduction. - ;This is the first English translation of the major Armenian epic on Adam and Eve composed by Arak'el of Siwnik' in the early fifteenth century. Arak'el writes extremely powerful narrative poetry, as in his description of the brilliance of paradise, of Satan's mustering his hosts against Adam and Eve, and Eve's inner struggle between obedience to God and Satan's seduction. In parts the epic is in dialogue form between Adam, Eve, and God. It also pays much attention to the typology of. Adam and Christ, or Adam's sin and death and Christ's crucifixion. By implication, this story, from an Eastern Christian tradition, is the story of all humans, and bears comparison with later biblical epics, such as Milton's Paradise Lost. Michael E. Stone's version preserves a balance between. literary felicity and faithfulness to the original. His Introduction sets the work and its author in historical, religious, and literary context. - ;All who work on the reception history of Adam and Eve are indebted to Stone for countless contributions in which he has made known to a wider audience Armenian traditions that might otherwise be overlooked - G.J Brooke, Journal for the Study of the Old Testament;welcome, unusual, and indeed exciting book...There is a great amount of significant and unusual material here which may be examined from a variety of viewpoints, and this first-class (and also beautifully produced) work will be, as intended, of interest well beyond Armenian studies. - Brian Murdoch, Journal of Jewish Studies; While English-speakers can judge Stone's exquisite writing style, we can confirm that his language is striking for its faithfulness to the original work. - Gohar Muradyan, Vienna Armeno

Admonition and Curse
By: Weeks, Noel
Published by: T&T Clark
The occurrence of treaties throughout the Ancient Near East has been investigated on a number of occasions, generally in order to resolve certain questions arising in the biblical field. As a result of that focus, the existence of a similar institution in a number of different cultures has not been treated as a problem in itself. Generally the existence of treaties throughout the area has been taken for granted, or a simple borrowing model has been used to explain how similar forms came to be used in different cultures. Why forms were similar across the area has not been probed. This work investigates treaty occurrences in different cultures and finds that the forms used correlate with ways of maintaining political control both internally and over vassals. Related concepts are projected in official accounts of history. Thus one can roughly distinguish threats based on power from persuasion based on benevolence and historical precedent, though various combinations of these two occur. There is a likely further connection of the means chosen to the degree of centralisation of power within the society. Underlying the local traditions is a common tradition which has to be dated to the pre-literate period. Biblical covenants fit within this pattern. The cultures treated are Mesopotamia, the Hittites, Egypt, Syrian centres and Israel.

Alien in Israelite Law
By: van Houten, Christiana
Published by: Sheffield Academic Press
One of the first systematic and critical reconstructions of the history of the social class of aliens in ancient society, this study develops new insights gained from the sociological approach to biblical literature. As Israel developed from tribal society to state, from state to confessional community and from confessional community to province, the identity and legal status of the alien developed in a concomitant way. Laws which initially afforded the alien only partial social and cultic inclusion in the pre-exilic period eventually required complete equality between the alien and Israelite in the postexilic period.

The American Prophecies
By: Evans, Michael D.
Published by: FaithWords
From the time George Washington placed his hand upon a Bible and swore the oath to become the first president of the United States, the Jews-and more important, a Jewish homeland-have occupied a crucial place in America's history. The second president of the United States, John Adams, declared toward the end of his life, 'For I really wish the Jews again in Judea an independent nation.' Now internationally renowned Middle East expert and biblical scholar Mike Evans traces the efforts of American Christians to help establish a Jewish State through a 'prophetic memorial,' a declaration presented to five successive American presidents outlining the biblical mandate for a Jewish homeland. Evans describes in fascinating detail the events that led in 1948 to the birth of the nation of Israel. The hatred of the Arab world for the West-and toward America in particular-can be traced entirely to this nation's identification with Israel. America flirts with danger, Evans says, when it accommodates the Arab world merely for the sake of oil. As God said to Abraham, 'I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse.' America's prophetic future hangs on the nation's moral vision and clarity. The hostility of Islamic fundamentalists toward America can be explained succinctly, Evans asserts: It is rooted in bigotry, the ancient prejudice against Jews. Yet, says Evans, 'America is cursing what God has blessed (Israel) and blessing what God has cursed (rebuilding Babylon [Iraq]). Does the Bible reveal what will happen to a nation that does this? A thousand percent yes!'
