A Country That Works
By: Stern, Andy
Published by: FREE PRESS IMPRINT
In his eye-opening diagnosis that makes the urgency of the threats vividly clear, Stern shows that Americans are contending with the most disruptive economic upheaval in the world economy since the Industrial Revolution. Yet, in the face of this daunting challenge, the American system simply isn't working well enough for most of us. Stern powerfully portrays how with the pace of globalization relentlessly quickening, the competitive pressures on our jobs and quality of life are heating up even more, especially as housing, health care, and oil prices skyrocket. While CEO salaries soar and business and the wealthy are handed plentiful tax shelters, the incomes of both white-collar and blue-collar workers stagnate, leaving most Americans struggling to pay off ever-escalating debt, instead of saving for retirement. The plain fact is that our system is out of whack, serving the interests of the top sliver of the most wealthy while putting the squeeze on the rest of us.

Differences and Changes in Wage Structures
By: Freeman, Richard (ed.); Katz, Lawrence F. (ed.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
During the past two decades, wages of skilled workers in the United States rose while those of unskilled workers fell; less-educated young men in particular have suffered unprecedented losses in real earnings. These twelve original essays explore whether this trend is unique to the United States or is part of a general growth in inequality in advanced countries. Focusing on labor market institutions and the supply and demand forces that affect wages, the papers compare patterns of earnings inequality and pay differentials in the United States, Australia, Korea, Japan, Western Europe, and the changing economies of Eastern Europe. Cross-country studies examine issues such as managerial compensation, gender differences in earnings, and the relationship of pay to regional unemployment. From this rich store of data, the contributors attribute changes in relative wages and unemployment among countries both to differences in labor market institutions and training and education systems, and to long-term shifts in supply and demand for skilled workers. These shifts are driven in part by skill-biased technological change and the growing internationalization of advanced industrial economies.

Effective Resolution of Collective Labour Disputes
By: Brenninkmeijer, A.F.M. (ed.); Jagtenberg, R. (ed.); De Roo, A (ed.)
Published by: Europa Law Publishing
In the early summer of 2005, an international expert meeting was convened in The Hague to share and compare national experiences with conciliation and mediation as methods for resolving collective labour disputes. Both the European Union and the Council of Europe have committed themselves to promoting these methods, which aim to assist disputants in finding creative, negotiated solutions, preserving their long-standing relationships. Ideally, trade unions and employers (associations) have such long-standing relationships, and many European countries have specialised conciliation officers or mediation services operating in this area. The expert meeting brought together a mix of leading mediators and academics from Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Spain and the Netherlands to share their experiences and to exchange their views on the changes permeating Europe today: the rise of transnational labour disputes, the decentralization of collective bargaining, the process of de-unification, the joining of the EU by new member states without a social dialogue tradition, and the insights generated by the emerging science of principled bargaining, facilitative mediation and conflict management. All these developments are likely to increase the demand for expert mediation services to assist more often less experienced negotiators. Thereby, the very nature of mediation may gradually change. The national reports in this book are preceded by an introduction, a synthesis analysis, and a comprehensive overview of EU initiatives in the field of collective labour law and dispute resolution.

Emerging Labor Market Institutions for the Twenty-First Century
By: Freeman, Richard (ed.); Hersch, Joni (ed.); Mishel, Lawrence (ed.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
Emerging Labor Market Institutions for the Twenty-First Century provides the first in-depth assessment of how effectively labor market institutions are responding to the decline of private sector unions. This important volume provides case studies of new labor market institutions and new directions for existing institutions. While non-union institutions are unlikely to fill the gap left by the decline of unions, the findings suggest that emerging groups and unions might together improve some dimensions of worker well-being. Emerging Labor Market Institutions is the story of workers and institutions in flux, searching for ways to represent labor in the new century.
