Bayesian Reliability
By: Hamada, Michael S.; Wilson, Alyson G.; Reese, C. Shane; Martz, Harry F.
Published by: Apress
Bayesian Reliability presents modern methods and techniques for analyzing reliability data from a Bayesian perspective. The adoption and application of Bayesian methods in virtually all branches of science and engineering have significantly increased over the past few decades. This increase is largely due to advances in simulation-based computational tools for implementing Bayesian methods. The authors extensively use such tools throughout this book, focusing on assessing the reliability of components and systems with particular attention to hierarchical models and models incorporating explanatory variables. Such models include failure time regression models, accelerated testing models, and degradation models. The authors pay special attention to Bayesian goodness-of-fit testing, model validation, reliability test design, and assurance test planning. Throughout the book, the authors use Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms for implementing Bayesian analyses--algorithms that make the Bayesian approach to reliability computationally feasible and conceptually straightforward. This book is primarily a reference collection of modern Bayesian methods in reliability for use by reliability practitioners. There are more than 70 illustrative examples, most of which utilize real-world data. This book can also be used as a textbook for a course in reliability and contains more than 160 exercises. Noteworthy highlights of the book include Bayesian approaches for the following: Goodness-of-fit and model selection methods Hierarchical models for reliability estimation Fault tree analysis methodology that supports data acquisition at alllevels in the tree Bayesian networks in reliability analysis Analysis of failure count and failure time data collected from repairable systems, and the assessment of various related performance criteria Analysis of nondestructive and destructive degradation data Optimal design of reliability experiments Hierarchical reliability assurance testi

A Beginner's Guide To Structural Equation Modeling
By: Schumacker, Randall E.; Lomax, Richard G.
Published by: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates (LEA)
An introduction to structural equation modeling, this text focuses on the conceptual steps taken in analyzing theoretical models. It reviews correlation and covariance, followed by multiple regression, path and factor analysis techniques. The goal is to enable the reader to conduct their own SEM analysis and understand and critique SEM research.

Benchmarking, Temporal Distribution, and Reconciliation Methods for Time Series
By: Cholette, Pierre A.; Dagum, Estela Bee
Published by: Springer
Modern economies rely on time series at all levels of activity. Time series are used by decision makers to plan for a better future. This book deals with time series data transformations. In order to facilitate understanding of their properties and limitations of the methods discussed, a real data example is followed throughout the book.

Beyond Beta
By: Kotz , Samuel; Dorp, Johan René
Published by: World Scientific
Statistical distributions are fundamental to Statistical Science and are a prime indispensable tool for its applications. This monograph is the first to examine an important but somewhat neglected field univariate continuous distribution on a bounded domain, excluding the beta distribution. It provides an elementary but thorough discussion of ''novel'' contributions developed in recent years, such as the two-sided power, generalized trapezoidal and generalized Topp and Leone distributions, among others. It discusses a general framework for constructing two-sided distributions and some of its properties. It contains a comprehensive chapter on the triangular distribution as well as a chapter on earlier extensions not emphasized in existing literature. Special attention is given to estimation, in particular, non-standard maximum likelihood procedures. The applications are drawn mainly from the econometric and engineering domains.

Beyond Perturbation: Introduction to the Homotopy Analysis
By: Liao, Shijun
Published by: Chapman & Hall/CRC
Solving nonlinear problems is inherently difficult, and the stronger the nonlinearity, the more intractable solutions become. This book introduces a powerful new analytic method for nonlinear problems-homotopy analysis-that remains valid even with strong nonlinearity. The author starts with a very simple example, then presents the basic ideas, detailed procedures, and the advantages (and limitations) of homotopy analysis. Part II illustrates the application of homotopy analysis to many interesting nonlinear problems. Written by a pioneer in its development, Beyond Pertubation: Introduction to the Homotopy Analysis Method is the first book to explore the details of this valuable new approach.

Biometric System and Data Analysis
By: Ted, Dunstone; Yager, Neil
Published by: Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
Biometric systems are being used in more places and on a larger scale than ever before. As these systems mature, it is vital to ensure the practitioners responsible for development and deployment, have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of tuning biometric systems. The focus of biometric research over the past four decades has typically been on the bottom line: driving down system-wide error rates. In doing so, powerful recognition algorithms have been developed for a number of biometric modalities. These algorithms operate exceedingly well under test conditions. Books on biometrics tend to focus on biometric systems and their components, and differentiate between the various biometric modalities. Biometric System and Data Analysis: Design, Evaluation, and Data Mining brings together aspects of statistics and machine learning to provide a comprehensive guide to evaluating, interpreting and understanding biometric data. This professional book naturally leads to topics including data mining and prediction, which have been widely applied to other fields but not rigorously to biometrics, to be examined in detail. Biometric System and Data Analysis: Design, Evaluation, and Data Mining places an emphasis on the various performance measures available for biometric systems, what they mean, and when they should and should not be applied. The evaluation techniques are presented rigorously, however are always accompanied by intuitive explanations that can be used to convey the essence of the statistical concepts to a general audience. This last point is an important one for the increased acceptance of biometrics among non-technical decision makers, and ultimately thegeneral public. Biometric System and Data Analysis: Design, Evaluation, and Data Mining is designed for a professional audience composed of practitioners and researchers in industry. This book is also suitable as a reference for advanced-level students in computer science and engineering.

Biostatistica in Radiologia
By: Sardanelli, Francesco; Di Leo, Giovanni
Published by: Springer Berlin Heidelberg

Biostatistics and Microbiology
By: Paulson, Daryl S.
Published by: Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
This a oenuts and boltsa book provides a condensation of biostatistical methods that applied microbiology researchers need to perform data analyses. Based on the authora (TM)s more than two decades of applied research and teaching experience, it is presented in a straight-forward manner, applicable by practicing microbiologists with minimal backgrounds in mathematics. All methods rely only on the use of a basic hand-held calculator. The overriding goal of this book is to ground onea (TM)s microbiological expertise and experience in onea (TM)s research pursuits, using biostatistics not as a black box, but as a tool. The book begins with a broad discussion of the experimental process, leading to one-sample, two-sample, and multi-sample comparisons. Each regression analysis will be presented, as well as an example. Nonparametric methods will be discussed, as well as when they should be applied. Finally, special topics of statistics in microbiology (i.e., viral, plant, animal, human, food, industrial and microbial microbiology) will be presented.
