Screams from the Balcony
By: Bukowski, Charles
Published by: Harper Collins
Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in Andernach, Germany, and raised in Los Angeles, where he lived for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944, when he was twenty-four, and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp (1994).

Selected Letters
By: Cicero; Walsh, P. G. (trans.)
Published by: OUP Oxford
This selection of Cicero's letters not merely documents in detail Cicero's career but simultaneously provides a month-by-month record of the collapse of the republic and its replacement by a tyranny. It provides a vivid picture of daily life and politics in Rome, the assassination of Caesar, and Cicero's vain resistance to the rise of Mark Antony. - ;'How I wish that you had invited me to that most attractive feast on the Ides of March!'. Cicero lived through some of the most turbulent years in the history of Rome, and witnessed at first-hand the overthrow of the republic and its replacement by a tyranny. His letters to friends and family are an astonishingly detailed record of daily life and politics in Rome. This selection, covering the years 68-43 BC, not merely documents in detail Cicero's career but simultaneously provides a month-by-month record of the final collapse of the Roman senatorial government. The letters. provide from the inside a vivid picture of events from the high point of Cicero's consulship of 63, through the humiliation of his exile and subsequent subjection to the dynasts, to the assassination of Caesar in 44, and Cicero's brief hour of glory in leading senatorial resistance to the tyranny of Mark. Antony. In P. G. Walsh's lively new translation, Cicero's correspondence once more brings alive the excitement and danger of ancient Rome. -

Selected Letters of Charlotte Brontë
By: Smith, Margaret (ed.)
Published by: OUP Oxford
An intimate insight into Charlotte Bront--euml--;'s life at Haworth Parsonage, her experiences in a Belgian school, and her passionate attraction to Constantin Heger, husband of the school's directress. We learn of the astonishing success of Jane Eyre, Charlotte's agony over the early death of her brother Branwell and of Emily and Anne, and her secret correspondence with and tragically brief happy marriage to Arthur Nicholls, cut short by her death in 1855. - ;These letters give an insight into the life of a writer whose novels continue to be bestsellers. They reveal much about Charlotte Bront--euml--;'s personal life, her family relationships, and the society in which she lived. Many of her early letters are written with vigour, vivacity, and an engaging aptitude for self-mockery. In contrast, her letters to her 'master', the Belgian schoolteacher Constantin Heger, reveal her intense, obsessive longing for some response from him. Other. letters are deeply moving, when Charlotte endures the agony of her brother's and sisters' untimely deaths. We learn also of the progress of her writing, including the astonishing success of Jane Eyre, and of her contacts with her publishers, including the young George Smith; and we recognize in her letters. the life-experiences which are transmuted into the art of her novels. Contemporary society is brilliantly described in her letters from London, when she writes of her encounters with famous writers and with critics of her novels. We hear too of her visits to art galleries, operas, and the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace. Dramatic letters written in December 1852 convey the 'turbulence of feeling' in the Haworth curate Arthur Nicholls's proposal of marriage to her and in Mr. Bront--euml--;'s violent reaction to it; and we subsequently hear of her secret correspondence with her suitor, her father's eventual consent, and her tragically brief happy marriage, cut short

Selected Letters of Sir J. G. Frazer
By: Ackerman, Robert (ed.)
Published by: OUP Oxford
An edition of selected letters by (and in some cases to) Sir J. G. Frazer (1854-1941), the eminent anthropologist and historian of religion, and author of The Golden Bough. It offers an invaluable insight into British intellectual life at the turn of the century, and also illuminates the composition, and reception, of The Golden Bough itself. - ;This is a fully annotated edition of selected letters by (and in some cases to) Sir J. G. Frazer (1854-1941), the eminent anthropologist, classicist, and historian of religion. Frazer was read by virtually everyone working in those fields in the first third of the twentieth century. His great work, The Golden Bough, offered a grand vision of humanity's mental and spiritual evolution - from vain attempts to compel the gods to do our bidding (which Frazer called magic). through equally vain attempts to propitiate the gods through prayer and sacrifice (his characterization of religion) to rationality and science. His richly varied correspondence with prominent figures such as Edmund Gosse, A. E. Housman, and Bronislaw Malinowski, among others, offers an unparalleled insight into. British intellectual life of the time, and also throws light upon the composition of The Golden Bough itself. - ;Ackerman carries off his project with the deceptive ease of one who knows more about Frazer than anyone else alive. Like his earlier biography, this collection will be an indispensable resource for students of Frazer for many years to come. - Robert Alun Jones, Religion; We are not finished with him yet. - Robert Fraser, The Classical Review;this collection will be an indispensable resource for students of Frazer for many years to come. - Robert Alun Jones, Religion; The volume is not merely essential for anthropologists, but will be read with profit and pleasure by all who take a lively interest in the cultural history of recent times. It will certainly entice you to hunt out that old one-volume abridgement of The Golden Bough. - Gordon K

Selected Letters, Orations, and Rhetorical Dialogues
By: de Scudery, Madeleine; Donawerth, Jane (trans.); Strongson, Julie (trans.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
Madeleine de Scudéry (1607-1701) was the most popular novelist in her time, read in French in volume installments all over Europe and translated into English, German, Italian, and even Arabic. But she was also a charismatic figure in French salon culture, a woman who supported herself through her writing and defended women's education. She was the first woman to be honored by the French Academy, and she earned a pension from Louis XIV for her writing. Selected Letters, Orations, and Rhetorical Dialogues is a careful selection of Scudéry's shorter writings, emphasizing her abilities as a rhetorical theorist, orator, essayist, and letter writer. It provides the first English translations of some of Scudéry's Amorous Letters, only recently identified as her work, as well as selections from her Famous Women, or Heroic Speeches, and her series of Conversations. The book will be of great interest to scholars of the history of rhetoric, French literature, and women's studies.

Selected Writings of an Eighteenth-Century Venetian Woman of Letters
By: Turra, Elisabetta Caminer; Sama, Catherine M. (trans.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
Elisabetta Caminer Turra (1751-96) was one of the most prominent women in eighteenth-century Italy and a central figure in the international "Republic of Letters." A journalist and publisher, Caminer participated in important debates on capital punishment, freedom of the press, and the abuse of clerical power. She also helped spread Enlightenment ideas into Italy by promoting and publishing Voltaire's latest works and translating new European plays-plays she herself directed, to great applause, on Venetian stages. . Bringing together Caminer's letters, poems, and journalistic writings, nearly all published for the first time here, Selected Writings offers readers an intellectual biography of this remarkable figure as well as a glimpse into her intimate correspondence with the most prominent thinkers of her day. But more important, Selected Writings provides insight into the passion that animated Caminer's fervent reflections on the complex and shifting condition of women in her society-the same passion that pushed her to succeed in the male-dominated literary professions.

Steinbeck
By: Steinbeck, John
Published by: The Penguin Group (USA)
"Surely his most interesting, plausibly his most memorable, and . . . arguably his best book" The New York Times Book Review. For John Steinbeck, who hated the telephone, letter-writing was a preparation for work and a natural way for him to communicate his thoughts on people he liked and hated; on marriage, women, and children; on the condition of the world; and on his progress in learning his craft. Opening with letters written during Steinbeck's early years in California, and closing with a 1968 note written in Sag Herbor, New York, Steinbeck: A Life in Letters reveals the inner thoughts and rough character of this American author as nothing else has and as nothing else ever will. "The reader will discover as much about the making of a writer and the creative process, as he will about Steinbeck. And that's a lot." Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. "A rewarding book of enduring interest, this becomes a major part of the Steinbeck canon." The Wall Street Journal
