Amazing Adventure: Joe and Hadassah's Personal Notes on the 2000 Campaign

There has never been such a frank account of the American way of running for national office. The Liebermans' voices alternate throughout the book as they describe the excitement, their sense of the honor of being chosen, the extraordinary and sometimes exhausting demands, and the satisfactions and joys of the hard-fought campaign they waged as a team. more...

Approval Voting
By: Brams, Steven J.; Fishburn, Peter C.
Published by: Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

"Approval Voting" proposes a compelling way to elect some 500,000 officials in public elections. Under this system voters may vote for, or approve of, as many candidates as they like in multicandidate elections. Among the many benefits of approval voting are its propensity to elect the majority candidate (rather than the strongest minority candidate, as often occurs under plurality voting), its relative invulnerability to insincere or strategic voting, and - by offering voters the opportunity to influence election outcomes more equitably - a probable increase in voter turnout. Since the publication of the first edition of this book, its arguments in favor of an election reform practically unknown in 1983 have stood the test of time. Perhaps the proof of the pudding lies in the adoption of approval voting by about a dozen professional societies - several with tens of thousands of members - and their generally favorable experience with it. After a generation of discussion and debate on the subject, the authors remain convinced that "Approval Voting" is as relevant today as it was when rigorous analysis and systematic empirical research on this election reform began more than 30 years ago. more...

Atlantic Reverberations
By: Adams, Paul C.
Published by: Ashgate

The Battle for America 2008
By: Balz, Daniel J; Johnson, Haynes Bonner
Published by: Viking Adult

The election of 2008 shattered political barriers, illuminated undercurrents of race, gender, and class, and ignited an extraordinary battle among some of the most formidable political rivals ever to seek the presidency in Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John McCain. It was an election that played out against a backdrop of wars, a shattered economy and deep pessimism about the future.Dan Balz and Haynes Johnson followed this campaign from the candidates’ first forays into Iowa and New Hampshire to the historic night of Obama’s victory celebration. They take listeners on a gripping journey through the epic battles for Iowa, Clinton’s dramatic comeback in New Hampshire, the racially tinged primary in South Carolina, the stunning endorsement of Obama by Edward M. Kennedy over the Clinton’s objections. They reveal the strategic mistakes of the Clinton campaign and the story behind Obama’s break-through organization. They cover McCain’s struggle for survival in the Republican primaries, Sarah Palin, and the economic meltdown that sealed Obama’s victory.Exclusive interviews with the candidates and their top strategists produce intimate portraits of Obama, Clinton, and McCain under stress throughout the longest and most expensive presidential campaign in American history. Balz and Johnson also move far off the campaign trail to listen to voters in battleground states express their deep anxieties about the darkening economic climate and the challenges facing the U.S. This audiobook is a riveting account of how this election not only marked a new era in American politics but also offered a test of historic proportions at a watershed moment for our nation. more...
