Divided America
By: Black, Earl; Black, Merle
Published by: SIMON & SCHUSTER
Divided America tells the biggest story in American politics today. It's the story behind the emergence of a ferocious power struggle between conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats that is tearing the country's politics apart. Drawing on extensive polling data and close analyses of presidential, senatorial, and congressional elections over the past fifty years, two eminent political scientists show, for the first time, how partisan warfare has reduced both major parties to minority status and locked them into fierce power struggles in each election cycle, thereby making America less stable and more difficult to govern.

Doorstep Democracy
By: Read, James H.
Published by: University of Minnesota Press
The famous Tip ONeill axiom all politics is local comes alive in this chronicle of Democrat James H. Reads hard-fought but unsuccessfulby 98 votesbid for state legislature in the socially conservative communities of Stearns and Morrison Counties, Minnesota. Read door-knocked 7,500 households during his campaign, visiting with voters and engaging in genuine dialogue on doorsteps from St. Anthony to St. Joseph. At once a memoir of a hard-fought contest and a meditation on the state of American democracy, Reads work contrasts the modern media-driven political campaign, where candidates glean their knowledge of voters from pollsters and communication only flows one way, with the kind of true understanding of constituents and issues that can only grow from individual encounters. Face-to-face doorstep conversations, he claims, give a candidate (or volunteer) and voter an opportunity to truly persuade and learn from one another. In a district where the pro-life movement dominated politics, Reads invitation to honestly discuss abortion and reject single-issue politics resonated with many voters. Refusing the red state versus blue state view of American voters, Doorstep Democracy shows the power and importance of kitchen-table politicspeople sitting down together to tackle the issues that affect usand proves that voters and candidates can be convinced to change their minds. Read ultimately demonstrates how conversations between citizens concerned about their communities can get us beyond the television ads, mass mailings, and sound bites to rejuvenate American democracy.

Published by: Cambridge University Press
The Supreme Court's reapportionment decisions, beginning with Baker v. Carr in 1962, had far more than jurisprudential consequences. They sparked a massive wave of extraordinary redistricting in the mid-1960s. State legislative and congressional districts were redrawn more comprehensively - by far - than at any previous time in our nation's history.

Electing Our Masters
By: Lawrence, Jon
Published by: Oxford University Press (UK)
An engaging history of electioneering in Britain from the eighteenth century to the present, highlighting how the television age has altered the interaction of politicians and public and asking what the media must now do to reinvigorate public politics. - ;In this engagingly written history of electioneering in Britain from the eighteenth century to the present, Jon Lawrence explores the changing relationship between politicians and public. Throughout this period, he argues, British politics has been characterized by bruising public rituals intended to bestow legitimacy on politicians by obliging them to face an often irreverent public on broadly equal terms. Face-to-face interaction was central both to the disorderly civic rituals of eighteenth-century politics, and to the Victorian and Edwardian election meeting. Perhaps surprisingly, it also survived in pretty rude health between the wars, despite the emergence of the new mass communication media of radio and cinema. But the same cannot be said of the post-war era and the rise of television. Today most politicians are content merely to offer the semblance of meaningful engagement - walkabouts, canvassing and meetings are all designed to ensure that most senior politicians come into contact only with the smiling faces of that dwindling band, the 'party faithful'. Lloyd George and Churchill might have relished the rough and tumble of a tumultuous public meeting, but their modern counterpartstend to be more risk-averse (and not without reason, given that the cameras are always present to capture their mishaps). But this is not another nostalgic lament for a lost 'golden age'. On the contrary, Electing Our Masters argues that politicians frequently still crave the kudos to be derived from bruising encounters with an irreverent public - hence Tony Blair's so-called 'masochism strategy' in the 2005 election campaign, with its succession of gruelling sessions before live studio audiences. Elections and Democratization in Ukraine
By: Birch, Dr Sarah
Published by: Palgrave
Elections and Democratization in Ukraine analyses the role of competitive elections in the Ukraine's crucial democratic transition period of 1989 to 1998, focusing on how Ukrainian voters make vote choices and which electoral cleavages are most important. Contrary to those who claim that the Soviet Union left in its wake an atomized society with weak social divisions, this study argues that the Ukrainian electorate has from the advent of competitive elections exhibited relatively stable voting behaviour.

These widely differing rules exert considerable influence on party systems and political processes. Exhaustive statistics on all national elections and referendums are given in. each chapter. Together with the other books of this series, Elections in the Americas is a highly reliable resource for historical and cross-national comparisons of elections and electoral systems worldwide. - ;Dieter Nohlen's German-language elections handbook for Latin America (1993) was a superb data source that I have been using steadily. The updated English version, also including North America, will be indispensable for all those who study elections, parties, and democratization comparatively. - Rein Taagepera, University of California, Irvine, and University of Tartu, Estonia;'If, historically, academic studies have for the most part ignored elections in Latin America, the widespread advance of democracy during the last quarter of a
