Hidden Self-Harm
By: Turp, Maggie
Published by: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
This practical and accessible book of case studies takes a new look at self-harm, focusing on the under-explored area of 'hidden' self-harming behaviour. The roots of self-care in maternal care are investigated using the method of psychoanalytic infant observation. The case studies that follow revolve around examples of low-level self-cutting, self-hitting, eating distress and 'self-harm by omission', including unconsciously invited accidents and failures to 'take care' and to seek appropriate medical care. As well as attending to self-harming symptoms, the author highlights the importance of identifying and building on the self-caring tendency that brings the client to psychotherapy. Using both psychoanalytic and postmodern thinking to reflect on the clinical material, the book emphases the unique nature of each client's experience and quest for personal meaning. It also explores the culturally embedded nature of judgements that certain behaviours qualify as 'normal' while others attract the label 'self-harm'. Written from a psychoanalytic perspective, but using straightforward language, Hidden Self-Harm is a stimulating read and a valuable resource for social workers, teachers, general practitioners, nurses and lay helpers as well as for counsellors and psychotherapists.

Passionate Supervision
By: Shohet, Robin (ed.)
Published by: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
This is a book that unashamedly brings love, spirit and soul into the heart of the supervision process but does so without becoming sanctimonious or precious. We see this through the various heart-felt experiences and stories of the different helping professionals that Robin Shohet has brought together". - from Foreword by Peter Hawkins, author of Supervision in the Helping Professions. Practitioners working in the helping professions realise the importance of supervision as a space for: reflection; compassionate inquiry; and continuing professional development. This book presents examples of good practice which will help readers to enhance their own supervisory relationships. Robin Shohet brings together supervisors from the fields of consultancy, education, coaching, psychotherapy, youth work and homeopathy, many of whom have been supervising for over 20 years. The contributors explain why supervision continues to be just as important as when they first started, and describe how and why they have managed to stay passionate about their chosen career. The book features numerous case examples to illustrate the different perspectives, demonstrating that supervision is essential and rewarding in a variety of professions. Passionate Supervision is a valuable resource for anyone working in the helping professions, for whom supervision is an integral part of their work. "

Acceptance
By: Marcus, David L.
Published by: The Penguin Group (USA)
A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist spends a year with a legendary high school guidance counselor who gets kids into the right colleges by focusing on self-discovery rather than test scores, grades, and the other traditional tools of the trade. Gwyeth Smith, known as Smitty, has made a national reputation by flouting the conventions of the college application ritual. He often steers kids from the SAT to the ACT, which he considers a more straightforward test that produces higher scores. He urges parents to home in on hidden bargains, scour the country for scholarships, and challenge financial aid offices rather than take out large loans. He will sometimes talk a seeming shoo-in candidate out of setting her sights on the prestigious Ivy League while goading another long-shot student into aiming for that same Ivy League school. His unorthodox approach is grounded on the principle that getting into college shouldnt just be about getting in; it should be a kids first great moment of self-discovery. David L. Marcus, a Pulitzer Prize-winning former education writer for U.S. News & World Report, follows Smitty and his kids around Oyster Bay High, a diverse public school in Long Island, New York, as he works his unique magic on their applications and their lives. Smittys kids run the gamut from the sweet but pathologically disorganized boy next door to the valedictorian who applies to twenty-eight schools. As the year unfolds, Smitty deals in his own ingenious way with almost every complication that can bedevil the applications process. What about the kid who doesnt test well? The kid who plunges into depression after being rejected by Columbia? The overachieving Korean American boy worried about reverse discrimination? Smitty has answers for all of them. While Smitty excels at easing the pressure of the college hunt, his success comes from imposing a differentand deeperchallenge. He makes kids articulate (orally and in writin

Adolescent Encounters with Death, Bereavement, and Coping
By: Balk, David (ed.); Corr, Charles (ed.)
Published by: Springer Publishing Company
Over a decade has passed since the publication of the groundbreaking Handbook of Adolescent Death and Bereavement. Much has transpired since then in terms of theoretical understandings, research advances, and practical experiences. The Handbook appeared in a pre-9/11 world. We know more about complicated bereavement than we did in 1996. This book explores the numerous imaginative conceptual frameworks and models have appeared on the scene: the dual process model for understanding loss, ideas about assumptive worlds, debates about the benefit and harm of grief counseling with the normally bereaved, efforts to bridge the gap separating researchers and practitioners, and stimulating essays about recovery and resilience following bereavement. Additionally, unlike the Handbook , Adolescent Encounters with Death, Bereavement, and Coping emphasizes cultural factors that often significantly the adolescent coping with death. The book is also a research-based text, providing considerable focus in each chapter on peer-reviewed research dealing with the various topics.

Advocacy Skills for Health and Social Care Professionals
By: Bateman, Neil
Published by: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
Most professionals working in health or social care will be required to act as advocates as part of their work. A social worker or community nurse may need to obtain extra benefits or a particular service for a client; a housing official may need to help a tenant whose benefit has been delayed thus placing them at risk of homelessness; a voluntary body may decide to challenge a statement of special educational needs for a child. This is a practical guide to advocacy skills specifically written for those in the health and social care professions. Neil Bateman examines the function of advocacy within these professions and how to interview, negotiate and self-manage successfully. He provides a structure for advocacy, a guide to the ethical implications and advice on litigation and legal matters. Accessible and comprehensive, Advocacy Skills for Health and Social Care Professionals will be an essential resource for all those wishing to improve their practice.
