Characterization of Semiconductor Heterostructures and Nanostructures
By: Lamberti, Carlo
Published by: Elsevier
Characterization of Semiconductor Heterostructures and Nanostructures is structured in chapters, each one devoted to a specific characterization technique used in the understanding of the properties (structural, physical, chemical, electrical etc..) of semiconductor quantum wells and superlattices. A chapter is devoted to the ab initio modeling. The book has basically a double aim. The first one lies on the educational ground. The book provides the basic concept of each of the selected techniques with an approach understandable by master and PhD students in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Engineering, Nanotechnology. The second aim is to provide a selected set of examples from the recent literature of the TOP results obtained with the specific technique in understanding the properties of semiconductor heterostructures and nanostructures. Each chapter has this double structure: a first part devoted to explain the basic concepts, providing the larger possible audience, and a second one to the discussion of the most peculiar and innovative examples, allowing the book to have the longer possible life time. Of course, the book is devoted to the specialized subset of scientists working in the fields of design, growth, characterization, testing of heterostructures-based devices in both academic and industrial laboratories. But the final goal is somewhat more ambitious, and in this regard the topic of quantum wells, wires and dots should be seen as a pretext of applying top level characterization techniques in understanding the structural, electronic etc
properties of matter at the nanometer (even sub-nanometer) scale. In this way it is aimed to become a reference book in the much broader, and extremely hot, field of Nanotechnology. Type Source Promotion.

Structure and Architecture
By: Macdonald, Angus J.
Published by: Architectural Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
Structure and Architecture' is an essential textbook for students and practitioners of architecture and structural engineering. MacDonald explains the basic principles of structure and describes the ranges of structure types in current use. Furthermore, the book links these topics directly with the activity of architectural design and criticism. An update of the first edition, 'Structure and Architecture 2ed' includes a revised opening chapter, and a new section that discusses prominent buildings constructed since the last edition was published in 1994. Angus MacDonald deals with structures holistically, relating detailed topics back to the whole structure and building. He aims to answer the questions: What are architectural structures? How does one define the difference between the structure of a building and all of the other components and elements of which it consists? What are the requirements of structures? What is involved in their design? An understanding of the concepts involved in answering these questions and an appreciation of how the structure of a building functions enhances the ability of an individual to appreciate its architectural quality. This book is unique in that it discusses the structural component of architectural design in the context of visual and stylistic issues.

Access for Disabled People to Arts Premises
By: Noble, C Wycliffe; Lord, Geoffrey; Noble, Wycliffe
Published by: Architectural Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
Illustrating actual building design solutions that have been created to improve accessibility for disabled patrons and performers, the 'Journey Sequence' outlines the best examples of design innovation produced in response to new and upcoming legislation.A knowledge of how to design for the disabled can be crucial in winning contracts and having designs accepted. This book shows how the practical implications have already been successfully approached.Covering the whole sequence from parking, to entry, and including details of facilities for the visually and hearing impaired users, advice is given on the methods designers should use in assessing the requirements of disabled people. This is not a publication giving theoretical prescription but rather an illustrated record of achievements in buildings of all sizes where proper access to the disabled has been created. It includes 14 case studies and examples that illustrate the diverse ways that accessibility has been incorporated into arts buildings throughout the UK. This includes Cinemas, Theatres, Concert Halls, Opera Houses, Museums and Libraries. The author team highlights specific design details that are particularly unique, to stimulate the reader and show that creating better accessibility for the disabled both demands and creates innovative design.
