Global Analysis on Foliated Spaces
By: Moore, Calvin C.; Schochet, Claude L.; Levy, Silvio
Published by: Cambridge University Press

Presents a complete proof of Connes' Index Theorem generalized to foliated spaces, alongside the necessary background from analysis, geometry, and topology. It thus provides a natural introduction to the basic ideas of noncommutative topology. This edition has improved exposition, an updated bibliography, an index, and covers new developments and applications. more...

Graphs of Groups on Surfaces
By: White, A.T.
Published by: North Holland

The book, suitable as both an introductory reference and as a text book in the rapidly growing field of topological graph theory, models both maps (as in map-coloring problems) and groups by means of graph imbeddings on sufaces. Automorphism groups of both graphs and maps are studied. In addition connections are made to other areas of mathematics, such as hypergraphs, block designs, finite geometries, and finite fields. There are chapters on the emerging subfields of enumerative topological graph theory and random topological graph theory, as well as a chapter on the composition of English church-bell music. The latter is facilitated by imbedding the right graph of the right group on an appropriate surface, with suitable symmetries. Throughout the emphasis is on Cayley maps: imbeddings of Cayley graphs for finite groups as (possibly branched) covering projections of surface imbeddings of loop graphs with one vertex. This is not as restrictive as it might sound; many developments in topological graph theory involve such imbeddings. The approach aims to make all this interconnected material readily accessible to a beginning graduate (or an advanced undergraduate) student, while at the same time providing the research mathematician with a useful reference book in topological graph theory. The focus will be on beautiful connections, both elementary and deep, within mathematics that can best be described by the intuitively pleasing device of imbedding graphs of groups on surfaces. more...

Hamiltonian Chaos and Fractional Dynamics
By: Zaslavsky, George M.
Published by: OUP Oxford

This books gives a realistic contemporary image of Hamiltonian dynamics, dealing with the basic principles of the Hamiltonian theory of chaos in addition to very recent and unusual applications of nonlinear dynamics and the fractality of dynamics. - ;The dynamics of realistic Hamiltonian systems has unusual microscopic features that are direct consequences of its fractional space-time structure and its phase space topology. The book deals with the fractality of the chaotic dynamics and kinetics, and also includes material on non-ergodic and non-well-mixing Hamiltonian dynamics. The book does not follow the traditional scheme of most of today's literature on chaos. The intention of the author has been to put together some of the. most complex and yet open problems on the general theory of chaotic systems. The importance of the discussed issues and an understanding of their origin should inspire students and researchers to touch upon some of the deepest aspects of nonlinear dynamics. The book considers the basic principles of the Hamiltonian theory of chaos and some applications including for example, the cooling of particles and signals, control and erasing of chaos, polynomial complexity, Maxwell's Demon, and others. It presents a new and realistic image of the origin of dynamical chaos and randomness. An understanding of the origin of randomness in dynamical systems, which cannot be of the same origin as chaos, provides new insights in the diverse fields of physics,. biology, chemistry, and engineering. - ;The strengths of the book lie in its broad survey of the complexity of Hamiltonian dynamics and its focus on interesting physical examples. The book has many excellent figures and illustrations as well as an extensive bibliography. Each chapter has a modest collection of associated exercises. - William J. Satzer, Zentralblatt Math, Vol 1083 more...

Handbook of Discrete and Computational Geometry
By: Goodman, Jacob E.
Published by: CRC Press

While high-quality books and journals in this field continue to proliferate, none has yet come close to matching the Handbook of Discrete and Computational Geometry, which in its first edition, quickly became the definitive reference work in its field. But with the rapid growth of the discipline and the many advances made over the past seven years, it's time to bring this standard-setting reference up to date. Editors Jacob E. Goodman and Joseph O'Rourke reassembled their stellar panel of contributors, added manymore, and together thoroughly revised their work to make the most important results and methods, both classic and cutting-edge, accessible in one convenient volume. Now over more then 1500 pages, the Handbook of Discrete and Computational Geometry, Second Edition once again provides unparalleled, authoritative coverage of theory, methods, and applications. more...
