Compactifications of Symmetric and Locally Symmetric Spaces
By: Borel, Armand; Ji, Lizhen
Published by: Springer

Noncompact symmetric and locally symmetric spaces naturally appear in many mathematical theories, including analysis (representation theory, nonabelian harmonic analysis), number theory (automorphic forms), algebraic geometry (modulae) and algebraic topology (cohomology of discrete groups). In most applications, it is necessary to form an appropriate compactification of the space. The literature dealing with such compactifications is vast. The main purpose of this book is to introduce uniform constructions of most of the known compactifications with emphasis on their geometric and topological structures. The book is divided into three parts. Part I studies compactifications of Riemannian symmetric spaces and their arithmetic quotients. Part II is a study of compact smooth manifolds. Part III studies the compactification of locally symmetric spaces. Familiarity with the theory of semisimple Lie groups is assumed, as is familiarity with algebraic groups defined over the rational numbers in later parts of the book, although most of the pertinent material is recalled as presented. Otherwise, the book is a self-contained reference aimed at graduate students and research mathematicians interested in the applications of Lie theory and representation theory to diverse fields of mathematics. more...

Computational Commutative and Non-Commutative Algebraic Geometry
By: S. Cojocaru (ed.); G. Pfister (ed.); V. Ufnarovski (ed.)
Published by: IOS Press

This publication gives a good insight in the interplay between commutative and non-commutative algebraic geometry. The theoretical and computational aspects are the central theme in this study. The topic is looked at from different perspectives in over 20 lecture reports. It emphasizes the current trends in commutative and non-commutative algebraic geometry and algebra. The contributors to this publication present the most recent and state-of-the-art progresses which reflect the topic discussed in this publication. Both researchers and graduate students will find this book a good source of information on commutative and non-commutative algebraic geometry. more...

A Computational Differential Geometry Approach to Grid Generation
By: Liseikin, Vladimir D.
Published by: Springer

The process of breaking up a physical domain into smaller sub-domains, known as meshing, facilitates the numerical solution of partial differential equations used to simulate physical systems. This book provides information on the applications of geometric methods to advanced grid technology. more...

Contemporary Geometry And Related Topics, Proceedings Of The Workshop
By: Bokan, Neda (ed.); Djoric, Mirjana (ed.); Rakic, Zoran (ed.)
Published by: World Scientific

This volume covers a broad range of subjects in modern geometry and related branches of mathematics, physics and computer science. Most of the papers show new, interesting results in Riemannian geometry, homotopy theory, theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras, topological analysis, integrable systems, quantum groups, and noncommutative geometry. There are also papers giving overviews of the recent achievements in some special topics, such as the Willmore conjecture, geodesic mappings, Weyl's tube formula, and integrable geodesic flows. This book provides a great chance for interchanging new results and ideas in multidisciplinary studies. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:. • Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings). • CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Sciences. more...

Convex and Discrete Geometry
By: Gruber, Peter M.
Published by: Springer

Convex and Discrete Geometry is an area of mathematics situated between analysis, geometry and discrete mathematics with numerous relations to other areas. The book gives an overview of major results, methods and ideas of convex and discrete geometry and its applications. Besides being a graduate-level introduction to the field, it is a practical source of information and orientation for convex geometers. It should also be of use to people working in other areas of mathematics and in the applied fields. more...

Curves and Surfaces for CAGD
By: Farin, Gerald
Published by: Morgan Kaufmann (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

The fifth edition of a classic work on curves and surfaces modelling. Curves and surfaces modelling is vital to manufacturing where two-dimensional planning and development (e.g. drawings and blueprints) need to be translated into three-dimensional forms (e.g. cars and buildings). A proven resource for those working with or developing features for computer-aided geometric design applications, Curves and Surfaces for CAGD distinguishes itself by its unified treatment of all the basic methods in curve and surface design. This new edition offers the same informal, friendly style and comprehensive approach as its predecessors, together with up-to-date coverage of the field's latest developments. It is an essential purchase for computer graphics enthusiasts, CAD/CAM developers, geometric modeling researchers, and scientists who program their own modeling applications. more...

Déformations isomonodromiques et variétés de Frobenius
By: Sabbah, Claude
Published by: EDP Sciences

The theory of isomonodromic deformations enables the production of systems of non-linear differential equations or of their partial complex derivatives, beginning with one equation or a system of linear equations of a complex variable. The notion of a Frobenius structure on a complex analytic manifold is a beautiful application. more...
