Differential Geometry and Topology of Curves
By: Animov, Yu
Published by: CRC Press

This volume presents a classical approach to the general topics of the geometry of curves, including the theory of curves in n-dimensional Euclidean space. Contributions to the field by great geometers of the past are also highlighted. more...

Differential Geometry and Topology, Discrete and Computational Geometry
By: M. Boucetta (ed.); J.-M. Morvan (ed.)
Published by: IOS Press

The aim of this volume is to give an introduction and overview to differential topology, differential geometry and computational geometry with an emphasis on some interconnections between these three domains of mathematics. The chapters give the background required to begin research in these fields or at their interfaces. They introduce new research domains and both old and new conjectures in these different subjects show some interaction between other sciences close to mathematics. Topics discussed are; the basis of differential topology and combinatorial topology, the link between differential geometry and topology, Riemanian geometry (Levi-Civita connextion, curvature tensor, geodesic, completeness and curvature tensor), characteristic classes (to associate every fibre bundle with isomorphic fiber bundles), the link between differential geometry and the geometry of non smooth objects, computational geometry and concrete applications such as structural geology and graphism. more...

Dimension Theory in Dynamical Systems
By: Pesin, Yakov B.
Published by: The University of Chicago Press

The principles of symmetry and self-similarity structure nature's most beautiful creations. For example, they are expressed in fractals, famous for their beautiful but complicated geometric structure, which is the subject of study in dimension theory. And in dynamics the presence of invariant fractals often results in unstable "turbulent-like" motions and is associated with "chaotic" behavior. In this book, Yakov Pesin introduces a new area of research that has recently appeared in the interface between dimension theory and the theory of dynamical systems. Focusing on invariant fractals and their influence on stochastic properties of systems, Pesin provides a comprehensive and systematic treatment of modern dimension theory in dynamical systems, summarizes the current state of research, and describes the most important accomplishments of this field. Pesin's synthesis of these subjects of broad current research interest will be appreciated both by advanced mathematicians and by a wide range of scientists who depend upon mathematical modeling of dynamical processes. more...

Elliptic Curves
By: Schmitt, Susanne; Zimmer, Horst G.
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

The purpose of this textbook is to give an elementary introduction to elliptic curves. Due to the accessibility of computer-assisted calculations, the authors approach the theory from a computational view point. However, the book can also be read by those not interested in any computations. more...

Elliptic Theory and Noncommutative Geometry
By: Nazaikinskii, V.E.; Savin, A.Yu.; Sternin, B.Yu.
Published by: Birkhauser Verlag AG

The book deals with nonlocal elliptic differential operators. These are operators whose coefficients involve shifts generated by diffeomorphisms of the manifold on which the operators are defined. The main goal of the study is to relate analytical invariants (in particular, the index) of such operators to topological invariants of the manifold itself. This problem can be solved by modern methods of noncommutative geometry. To make the book self-contained, the authors have included necessary geometric material (C*-algebras and their K-theory, cyclic homology, etc.). more...

Embedding Problems in Symplectic Geometry
By: Schlenk, Felix
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

Symplectic geometry serves Hamiltonian dynamics and symplectic mappings occur as time-1-maps of Hamiltonian flows. Studies in the last few years have been done to show that certain things cannot be done by a symplectic mapping, such as mapping a ball into a thinner cylinder. Schlenk shows that certain other things can be done, through elementary an more...

Exotic Smoothness And Physics
By: Asselmeyer-Maluga, Torsten; Brans, Carl H
Published by: World Scientific

The recent revolution in differential topology related to the discovery of non-standard (“exotic”) smoothness structures on topologically trivial manifolds such as R4 suggests many exciting opportunities for applications of potentially deep importance for the spacetime models of theoretical physics, especially general relativity. This rich panoply of new differentiable structures lies in the previously unexplored region between topology and geometry. Just as physical geometry was thought to be trivial before Einstein, physicists have continued to work under the tacit — but now shown to be incorrect — assumption that differentiability is uniquely determined by topology for simple four-manifolds. Since diffeomorphisms are the mathematical models for physical coordinate transformations, Einstein’s relativity principle requires that these models be physically inequivalent. This book provides an introductory survey of some of the relevant mathematics and presents preliminary results and suggestions for further applications to spacetime models. more...
